From car sharing to garden clearance, Torbay Community Development Trust have reported some wonderful stories of how people in the community are supporting each other through their new online timebank.
Since we launched the community platform in February, Torbay Together have gathered 289 members, 372 hours have been offered and 250 timebank credits were earnt for doing good deeds in the community.
Despite the Torbay Together platform working well currently, we at Made Open recognise that it is vulnerable to the energy and efforts that TorbayCDT put in. It needs co-ownership. Indeed, Torbay Together is “a Torbay wide partnership that is made up of representatives from the private, public and voluntary and community sectors to define, manage and monitor the successful delivery of ‘Your Future – Your Torbay’ vision.”
Our challenge in Torbay, like all other regions where we are working, is to look at how any partner who wishes to serve the community for positive social impact can empower and mobilise people around shared goals. We envisage this being approached in two ways: firstly, by developing innovative partner collaborations to help communities counter more difficult times ahead; and secondly, by utilising available resources, skills and initiatives to inspire actionable change.
But as the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu famously said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. We are proud to be taking the first step with an innovative organisation like TorbayCDT.
