Platform Update 16 March 2026

Latest security and accessibility updates

By Phil Merrifield

We’ve introduced a range of security, usability and accessibility improvements across the Made Open platform. From Single Sign-On and stronger protection against attacks to better privacy controls and improved accessibility, these updates make our platforms safer, easier to use and more inclusive for everyone.

We’ve made a number of updates to improve security, usability, and accessibility across the platform. Many of these changes work behind the scenes, but together they make your platform safer, easier to use, and more inclusive for everyone.

Security improvements

Single Sign-On (SSO) for enterprise organisations

We’ve developed secure Single Sign-On (SSO) in partnership with Bristol City Council. This allows staff to log in using their existing Microsoft (Azure) accounts - no need to remember separate passwords. We’re currently rolling this out with Bristol and plan to offer it to other customers later this year.

If this is something you’d like to explore, please get in touch.

Stronger protection against bots and attacks

We’ve added smarter protections to prevent misuse of the platform, such as automated bots or denial-of-service attacks. The system now limits how quickly searches can be made (more than 5 searches in 10 seconds will be temporarily blocked). This won’t affect normal users but helps keep your platform stable and secure.

More control over contact information

For platforms that allow members to share additional details like phone numbers and addresses, we’ve now improved privacy controls so users can choose exactly who sees this information:

  • No one
  • Anyone
  • Logged-in members only
  • Only their connections

This gives members more confidence and control over their personal data.

Improved content editing experience

We’ve upgraded the text editor across the platform. It looks and works the same as before, but with important improvements behind the scenes:

  • Better security to prevent harmful content being added
  • Improved accessibility, especially for people using screen readers or keyboard navigation
  • Cleaner formatting, helping search engines and assistive tools better understand your content

Accessibility improvements

We continue to review and improve accessibility every 6 months to ensure the platform works well for everyone.

What we’ve improved recently:

  • Clearer page structure to help assistive technologies navigate content
  • Helpful prompts encouraging text descriptions when users create activities
  • A minimum text requirement to ensure activities include useful written information
  • Adjustments so images in activity descriptions don’t appear in activity tiles (to avoid confusion and improve clarity)

Accessibility tips for admins

You don’t need to be an accessibility expert when creating content for your platform - small changes can make a big difference. Here are three simple tips to keep your platform inclusive:

1. Always include text alongside images

If you upload posters or flyers, also add the key details as text. Screen readers can’t read text inside images.

2. Add “alt text” to images

When uploading images, include a short description (alt text). This helps visually impaired users understand the image and improves search visibility.

3. Use headings in the correct order

When structuring content:

  • Start with Heading 2, then Heading 3, etc.
  • Don’t skip levels.

This helps both users and assistive tools navigate content more easily.
