Make the most of autumn: 5 ways to keep your community platform active this October

By Claire Stevens

October is here. The summer holidays are behind us, autumn routines are settling in and people are looking for ways to stay active, connected and supported as the days get shorter. For community organisations and local networks, it's a good time to promote autumn activities, share useful information and encourage more people to get involved.

If you manage a community platform, here are five simple ways to keep your community engaged this October.

1. Refresh your community directory

Check that services, contact details and activities are up to date. Encourage local organisations to update their profiles, add new events and promote their latest opportunities.

2. Promote autumn activities

With half term approaching, help families find things to do. Highlight local events, walking groups, exercise classes, creative workshops and other activities that bring people together.

3. Highlight winter support

As the weather gets colder, make sure people can easily find information about warm spaces, food banks, financial advice, community transport and other local support services.

4. Promote volunteering

Feature local volunteering opportunities on your homepage, in newsletters and on social media. Include flexible opportunities for people who only have a few hours to spare.

5. Celebrate community success

Share positive stories from local groups and organisations. Whether they've launched a new service, welcomed volunteers or reached a milestone, celebrating their achievements can inspire others to get involved.

Small actions make a big difference

You don't need a big campaign to keep your community platform active. Regular updates, fresh activities and positive local stories can help more people find what they need and get involved.
